Marriage/Civil Union Process
  • Applicants must apply in-person in the municipality located in New jersey where either party resides. 
  • If you reside outside of the NJ and are getting you must contact the municipality in which the marriage ceremony is going to be performed.
  • Please complete the first page ONLY of the REG-77 -Application for Marriage, Remarriage, Civil Union, or Reaffirmation of Civil Union. The second page NEEDS to be signed in front of the Registrar and your witness. 
  • There is a $28 fee payable by cash, check, or money order to "Hampton Township"
  • Once the application is filed, there is a holding period of 72 hours. Once you pick up your marriage license, it is only valid for 30 days. Make sure to give yourself enough time from the date of applying, the 72 hour hold, and your wedding date when applying. If you need to waive the 72 hour period you must do so through a Court Order. 
  • Please call 973-383-5570 to schedule an appointment between the hours of 9am-4pm and/or ensure a Registrar is available to accept your application. 
  • After you are married, your marriage certificate is filed in the municipality in which ther ceremony took place.
  • To obtain a Certificate of Marriage, you must contact the Registrar in the municipality where the ceremony was performed.
